MacKrak is a brute force password cracker for the Macintosh. It cracks unix passwords by encrypting words from dictionary files, and comparing them to encrypted passwords. Though this program is a beta copy, it is shareware, and if you do decide to keep and use this, or future versions of the program, please send $10 to the address found in the about box.
This folder containts mackrak v2.01b for the Power Macintosh, a sample word file, and a sample password file. Please run MacKrak using these files first in order to understand better how it works.
This software is for the Power Macintosh only. For a 68040 version, ftp to 198.114.177.103 and look in /pub/mackrak.
The following are speed benchmarks for MacKrak on the Power Macintosh:
7100/80 - 1750 cps
8100/80 - 2250 cps
8500/130 - an astounding 5500 cps

MacKrak's performance is greatly increased when running with extensions turned off. Hold down the shift key during startup for best results. Shake well before using, and refridgerate after opening.

known bugs:
* MacKrak will not run in the background. It can be placed in the background to do other work, but it will not continue to run.
* The last line of the word file is not tested. This can be fixed for the time being by placing a copy of a previously used word on the last line.
* The letter 'x' sometimes appears at the beginning of each line of output. It does not affect the cracking process, and does not interfere with the cracked password, but it's there.
* The screen will not update cracked passwords after a window has been placed in front of it. All cracked passwords are also stored in the output file, so this should not create too much of a problem.
